ARSNI
In 2024 we started to think about an "Artist Run Studio Network Initiative"—a concept to connect studios and artist through out germany.

In 2024, SHD/ initiated a think tank to explore the creation of a nationwide network of artist-run studios. Together with two other studios in Germany — Playground in Munich and Freiraum in Düsseldorf — we began brainstorming how such a network could take shape and how it might strengthen independent artist.
Supported by the Basisförderung funding from the Ministry for Culture and Media of Hamburg, we held several online meetings and a three-day gathering in Düsseldorf. During this process, we collected ideas, shared experiences, and outlined the first prototype of what such a network could become.

Mission Statement (Preview)
- The Artist-Run Studio Network Initiative (ARSNI) is a collaborative alliance connecting artist-led studios in Germany and beyond. Our mission is to strengthen and empower these spaces by fostering exchange, solidarity, and visibility.
- ARSNI supports its members through the sharing of knowledge, practical advice, and experience in areas such as administration, funding, and community building. By uniting as a network, we aim to amplify the collective voice of artist-led studios in conversations and negotiations with institutions, cultural bodies, and funding agencies.
- Through regular online meetings, an accessible online profile platform, and shared resources, ARSNI provides its members with tools for collaboration and growth. Future initiatives include joint funding applications and residency exchanges, enabling members to host and connect across different studios for temporary residencies, showings, and artistic encounters.
- ARSNI is committed to the principle that all member studios must be artist-run, ensuring that decision-making and creative direction remain in the hands of artists themselves. By offering a shared mission statement and a common logo, members can publicly align with the values and vision of the network.
- Together, we create a stronger, more visible, and more resilient infrastructure for artist-led studios.
Mycelium Model
As part of a joint application by the three studios (Hamburg, Munich, Düsseldorf), we developed what could be called the “Mycelium Model.”
The idea was to extend from each studio, based in a metropolitan area, into surrounding rural regions and invite artists from there for short residencies. Each resident could then embark on a “residency tour” through the other two studios, creating opportunities to connect with new audiences and fellow artists across different regions of Germany.
We envisioned a model in which studios located in urban centers could share their advantages and resources in ways that also benefit structurally weaker regions. At the same time, a higher circulation of artists would bring fresh impulses and diversity back into the metropolitan areas.
As artist-run studios, we lack the financial means to realize this on our own. This concept was therefore developed as a prototype for concrete actions under ARSNI, intended to serve as a testrun for future network-wide collaborations.
Future
Although recent cuts in public funding have slowed down the progress of ARSNI, the enthusiasm and commitment of everyone involved remain strong. We stay connected, exchanging ideas and keeping the vision alive.
We are now looking for new ways to grow the initiative and bring it into practice. Joining forces with similar networks and collectives is not only welcome but something we truly aspire to.
Feel free to reach out if you’re interested in our initiative or working on a similar idea. We’re eager to connect with more people, groups, and studios who share the vision of coming together and building a stronger network.
